Phishing attacks via Google Sites: False court subpoenas undermine trust and threaten brands

Digital protection specialists issue a high alert: a new phishing scam, characterized by its sophistication and ability to circumvent security systems, is in full swing.

Scammers are exploiting a loophole in Google Sites to create fake emails that pose as subpoenas, supposedly issued by Google itself.

The ruse, which has deceived even the most experienced users, not only exposes sensitive data, but also casts a shadow of uncertainty about the reliability of brands that operate in the digital environment.

After all, how does this scam work and what is its real relevance for your company, regardless of your sector of activity? Discover the answer and get ready to protect yourself!

Google Sites: the new stage of phishing

A thorough investigation, detailed in a report published recently by the portal Olhar Digital, revealed the ingenuity behind this attack.

Scammers build fake pages on Google Sites that replicate, with impressive precision, the tech giant's support pages.

This similarity, combined with the familiarity and reliance that users deposit with Google creates a false sense of security, making it difficult to identify the scam, which follows a simple but incredibly effective script: victims receive emails informing them of an alleged judicial request for information from their Google account.

The fright and concern, amplified by the sender's apparent authenticity, lead users to click on the link provided. Without realizing it, they are redirected to the fake page, where they become easy prey for scams.

The sophistication of the technique lies in its ability to bypass the DKIM system, which, in theory, should guarantee the authenticity of the emails.

However, since the messages are sent through Google's legitimate platform, they are mistakenly recognized as legitimate, escaping security filters and reaching their potential victims.

Beyond personal data: brands at the epicenter of risk!

While data diversion is the primary objective, the indirect impact for brands is real, worrisome, and often underestimated. After all, the increasing incidence of Scams online, even when they occur on platforms considered safe and reliable, undermines consumers' trust in the digital environment as a whole, creating a climate of hesitation and uncertainty that affects all companies that operate online.

A customer who becomes the victim of a scam that uses your brand as bait - whether through the misuse of your logo, false promotions or any other type of ruse - may, even if unconsciously, develop an aversion to your company.

And even if your organization has no direct responsibility for what happened, after all, the mere association with false activities can generate distrust and alienate consumers, impacting your results and your reputation.

The negative consequences can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, including additional costs to manage reputational crises, loss of clients to the competition, difficulty building strong and lasting relationships with the public, and, in more extreme cases, even involvement in complex and costly lawsuits.

Arm yourself against the threat: essential strategies to protect your brand

In the face of this increasingly complex and challenging scenario, the adoption of a proactive and defensive stance is imperative.

And to do so, companies must implement a comprehensive and robust action plan, which encompasses constant monitoring of the internet for possible threats, continuous consumer awareness of Phishing risks and other forms of online scams and strategic collaboration with experts like Branddi to identify and neutralize threats before they cause irreparable harm.
